How to Install LED Boat Lights

Posted on

Whether you’re looking to attract bait fish, want to cut through the murkiness of the water, or just want to look cool while gliding through the water at night, LED lights installed below the water line on your boat are not only practical, they also up the coolness factor of your boat.

Although it’s highly recommended that you hire a qualified marine electrician to install your LIFEFORM LED underwater lights, you can install them yourself in less than two hours.

What You Will Need:

Power Drill with 1/2” and 1/8” drill bits, long enough to drill through the transom.

Phillips Screwdriver that accommodates #8 screws.

Blue Painter’s Tape, to hold the template in place without damaging the hull’s surface.

Marine-Grade Sealant. LIFEFORM LED recommends 3M 4200 sealant.

General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner.

Clean Shop Towels. A soft cloth, such as terry, is recommended.

OPTIONAL: 180-220 Grit Sandpaper.

Step One: Determine where you want to install your lights. They should be installed at a minimum of six inches below the water line, on a clean, unobstructed flat surface. Once you’ve determined the areas where the lights will be mounted, cut out the templates that are included with your LIFEFORM LED lights and tape them to the hull. Using the guides on the templates, mark the center and mounting holes with a pencil or dry marker.

Step Two: Now comes the fun part: drilling into the hull. It’s important to make sure that there is nothing behind the area where you want to mount the lights. If you’re not comfortable with drilling the holes, leave it to the professionals. Once the holes are drilled, clean the area using a clean towel and some adhesive cleaner. OPTIONAL: Gently sand the area inside the diameter of where the light fixture will go to help with adhesion. Clean the sanded area with adhesive cleaner.

Step Three: Run the wires of the light through the center hole. Give your surface a wipe to get rid of any debris that might be on the surface. Run a bead of sealant around the perimeter of the fixture, about 1/8” to 1/4” in from the edge. Also apply the sealant in and around the mounting and center holes. (You want a watertight seal in and around your light.)

Step Four: From the inside of the boat, pull the cable carefully and position the fixture on the outside. Using the #8 screws that came with the fixture, mount the fixture to the hull. IMPORTANT: Hand-tighten ONLY, just until the adhesive begins to squeeze out the sides of the fixture. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Wipe away any excess sealant.

Step Five: Refer to the wiring diagrams provided with your LIFEFORM LED light to wire the lighting. Make sure exposed wire is covered with electrical tape to avoid corrosion. Test your lights, and you’re ready to go!

Allow the sealant to cure according to manufacturer’s instructions before returning the boat to the water.
